Frequently Asked Questions

What are sand filter and carbon filter used for?

They are essential pressure-type pretreatment equipment for water treatment systems. The sand filter mainly removes suspended solids, silt, sediment and turbidity from water. The carbon filter is dedicated to removing residual chlorine, organic matter, peculiar smell and partial chroma. They are widely used to protect RO/UF membrane systems in industrial water, drinking water and wastewater reuse projects.

What is the working principle of the two filters?

Raw water flows downward through layered filter media. The sand filter relies on physical interception and screening of quartz sand media to trap particulate impurities. The carbon filter utilizes the porous adsorption characteristics of granular activated carbon to adsorb harmful substances in water. When the tank pressure difference rises to the set value, automatic air-water backwash will be triggered to clean the filter media and restore the filtration capacity.

What tank materials are available?

Optional materials include carbon steel with epoxy lining, FRP fiberglass, SS304 and SS316L stainless steel. Carbon steel and FRP are cost-effective for general industrial water, while stainless steel is suitable for food, beverage and high-purity water scenarios with higher sanitary requirements.

What working pressure can the filters bear?

Standard working pressure is 0.6MPa or 1.0MPa. Custom pressure specifications are available for special working conditions

What filter media do you use?

The sand filter adopts graded quartz sand, and manganese sand can be added additionally for raw water with excessive iron and manganese. The carbon filter uses high-quality granular activated carbon, including coconut shell carbon (better adsorption performance) and coal-based carbon (cost-effective).

What control modes are supported?

Both manual valve control and fully automatic pneumatic valve control are optional. The automatic type realizes intelligent backwash according to time or pressure difference, requiring no manual operation.

How often does backwash occur?

The backwash cycle depends on raw water quality and actual pressure difference. Under conventional water conditions, the backwash cycle is about 8–24 hours. The backwash time and flow rate can be customized.

How long is the service life of filter media?

Quartz sand can be used for 2–3 years. Activated carbon needs to be replaced every 1–2 years due to saturated adsorption. Regular backwash can effectively extend the service life of filter media.

What are the daily maintenance requirements?

Regularly check the tank pressure difference and operating status; inspect and replenish lost filter media periodically; check valves and pipelines for leakage; clean the filter tank regularly to ensure stable water output and filtration effect.

What water sources are the filters suitable for?

They are applicable to groundwater, surface water, tap water and industrial reused water. They can effectively improve water quality and meet the pretreatment requirements of subsequent membrane systems.

Can the equipment be customized?

Yes. We support customized flow capacity, tank size, working pressure, control system and filter media configuration. We can also provide CE/ISO certification, special anti-corrosion painting and size limit customization according to customer requirements

What is the difference between a sand filter and a carbon filter?

The sand filter focuses onphysical filtration to remove particulate impurities and reduce turbidity. The carbon filter focuses on adsorption purification to remove residual chlorine, organics and odors. In actual projects, they are usually used in series as the first and second stage of water pretreatment.
