Spiral‑wound Ultrafiltration Equipment
Spiral‑wound Ultrafiltration Equipment
Working principle of spiral‑wound ultrafiltration equipment
The core part is spiral‑wound UF membrane element, which is tightly rolled precision filter sheets.
Under feed pressure, raw water flows along the membrane surface. Part of water passes through tiny membrane pores to become purified permeate. Substances such as colloids, suspended solids, macromolecules and bacteria are too large to go through the membrane and get trapped on membrane surface. Most feed water flows tangentially across membrane, carrying trapped contaminants out as concentrate, to reduce membrane fouling.
UF can remove particles, bacteria and organics, but cannot remove dissolved salts.
Advantage:
1. High mechanical strength, no fiber breakage risk.
2. Excellent chemical resistance, easy for CIP & CEB cleaning.
3. Compact membrane module structure, high packing density.
4. Stable filtration performance, consistent permeate quality.
5. Low pressure operation, relatively low energy consumption.
6. Wide adaptability for multiple applications: RO pretreatment, wastewater reuse, process water.
7. Easy maintenance and simple system skid integration.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is spiral-wound UF, and how is it different from hollow fiber UF?
Spiral-wound UF membrane is made by wrapping flat sheet membrane around a central permeate tube. Hollow fiber uses capillary fiber bundles. Spiral-wound UF features better mechanical strength, resistant to fiber breakage, easier for CIP chemical cleaning; but it is more sensitive to large particles and oil, so pre-filtration is essential.
What is the typical pore size of spiral-wound UF membrane?
Normally 0.01~0.1 μm. It can retain colloids, bacteria, viruses and macromolecular organics, but cannot remove dissolved salts and ions.
What raw water is suitable for spiral-wound UF?
Raw water turbidity <50 NTU. Raw water with high oil, large suspended solids or heavy algae needs pre-treatment (bag filter, self-cleaning filter etc.) to avoid membrane channel blockage
What are the cleaning modes for spiral-wound UF?
① Backwash ② CEB (Chemical Enhanced Backwash) ③ CIP (Clean-in-Place). CIP uses sodium hypochlorite, citric acid for organic, microbial and inorganic fouling removal.
What is the service life of spiral-wound UF membrane?
3–5 years under proper operation, backwash & chemical cleaning. Poor raw water or insufficient cleaning will shorten membrane life.
Can spiral-wound UF skid run automatically?
Yes. Standard skid supports auto run, backwash, CEB, alarm and interlock. Manual work is only for periodic inspection and CIP maintenance.
What is the operating pressure range?
Low pressure operation, generally 0.1–0.3 MPa.
What are the common fouling types?
Particulate fouling, organic fouling, microbial fouling, inorganic scaling. Regular backwash and chemical cleaning control fouling.
